I just want to say a quick hello! I moved up to New York City about a month ago and started a Fellowship at Lincoln Center Education (LCE). If you're curious about the fellowship here is some information.
This past month has disappeared before my eyes! I will say that at first I was a little overwhelmed (having never lived in a city before) but now I think I'm starting to get the hang of it (maybe? :D). I moved to the city without knowing a single person but luckily I've had the other fellows in my program and the staff at Lincoln Center Education to support and guide me
For the past three weeks at Lincoln Center Education, I have been assisting and immersing myself in LCE's Summer Forum. Summer Forum is a three week program consisting of different workshops (ranging from 2 to 5 days) for educators and artists of all types. Participants experience LCE's Aesthetic Education principles which were inspired and developed by Maxine Greene. When I wasn't assisting the workshop facilitators, I had the opportunity to be apart of the 5 day Aesthetic Education Immersion workshop. I learned a lot from the Teaching Artists and the other participants in my workshop. The participants were from all over the world and included visual artists, dancers, actors, musicians, and teachers of all types (from elementary school teachers to college art history professors). It was inspiring just being in the same room as these accomplished individuals!
After participating in Aesthetic Education Immersion, I have already noticed a positive difference in my teaching style! Especially when working with larger groups of kids, I am able to better engage them in what we're learning. One critical detail that I took away from Summer Forum was that we shouldn't be teaching at our students. Instead, we should be enabling them (through resources and opportunities) to learn through discovery.
My next post will be about LCE's Middle School Audition Boot Camp which is happening right now! If you have any questions about moving to New York, Lincoln Center Education, the Kenan Fellowship, flute, teaching, etc. etc. please comment below or contact me here.
